Visa and Mastercard are accepted almost everywhere worldwide, including outside Europe. American Express (AMEX Platinum, AMEX Gold Card) has a lower acceptance rate of around 85%, so outside Europe it's ideal to also carry a Visa or Mastercard as a backup.
