Which Credit Card Should I Choose?

With dozens of credit cards on the market, the right choice is not always obvious. One card is completely free but offers few extras, another charges an annual fee but delivers cashback, travel insurance or airport lounge access in return. What is the best card for one person may not suit another at all. This page explains which factors actually matter when choosing a credit card, and shows how you can reach the best choice for your situation in just a few minutes.

The 5 questions that decide which credit card fits you

There is no single "best credit card" that works for everyone. But there are a handful of questions that, once you answer them honestly, narrow the choice down considerably. These are exactly the questions our Smart Choice tool asks you too.

1. What will you use the card for most?

Online shopping, travel, daily purchases, business expenses or a first card as a student all call for a different balance of cost and benefits. A card that is perfect for frequent travellers, with travel insurance and no foreign exchange fees, is often overkill for someone who only uses the card at home.

2. Do you have a BKR registration, or would you rather avoid a credit check?

A regular credit card requires a credit check. If you have a BKR registration, or simply want to avoid any risk there, a prepaid or debit card without a credit check is usually the safer and faster option.

3. What should the card cost?

Free cards such as those from Revolut, N26 or Bunq have no annual fee, but usually do not offer Priority Pass, full travel insurance or a miles programme. If you are willing to pay a few euros a month, cards with cashback, insurance or premium perks come within reach.

4. Do you need a credit limit, or would you rather pay off in full?

A charge card, such as some American Express cards, carries no running balance and must be paid off in full every month. A credit card lets you carry a balance instead, at interest. Which format suits you depends on how you want to manage your spending.

5. How important is a good app and fast delivery to you?

Neobanks such as N26 and Revolut generally have the best apps, with real-time notifications and instant availability through Apple Pay or Google Pay. Traditional banks are often a bit slower here, but sometimes offer benefits if you are already a customer.

Why comparing on your own often takes more time than needed

The Netherlands has dozens of credit cards, spread across banks, neobanks and specialised providers. Each card has its own conditions around income, credit checks, costs and rewards, and these are rarely laid out clearly side by side. Comparing ten cards yourself can easily take a whole evening, and you still would not know for sure if you missed something.

Our Smart Choice tool does this work for you. You answer a few short, personal questions (you can even select multiple goals at once, for example travel and business use), and you immediately see a top 4 of cards that best match your answers, including a match percentage per card. No mandatory registration, no sales pitch, just an honest comparison based on what you told us.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to find the right credit card?+
With the Smart Choice tool it takes about 2 minutes on average. You answer a few questions about what you use the card for and what matters most to you, and you immediately see a top 4 of matching cards.
Is the comparison really independent?+
Yes. We compare 60 credit cards from dozens of different providers and do not work exclusively with one bank. The order of the results is based on how well a card matches your answers, not on who pays the most.
Can I select multiple goals at once, for example travel and business use?+
Yes. On the first question you can select multiple goals at once, for example travel and business use. The tool then asks the relevant follow-up questions for each goal and takes all your answers into account in the result.
What if I have a BKR registration or want to avoid a credit check?+
The tool specifically asks about this and takes it into account in its advice. There are credit cards available without a BKR check, usually prepaid cards, and those will show up as a matching result.
Does using the comparison tool cost anything?+
No, the Smart Choice tool and the rest of the comparison site are completely free to use. No account or registration is needed to see your result.
