Who is American Express?
American Express was founded in 1850 in Buffalo, New York, originally as an express freight delivery company. It launched the first American Express charge card in 1958 and today operates in over 140 countries. AMEX is unique among major payment brands: while Visa and Mastercard operate purely as networks (relying on banks to issue cards), American Express both runs its payment network and issues cards directly to consumers.
In the Netherlands, American Express operates its own card issuing operation and manages the Membership Rewards loyalty programme directly. AMEX products are true credit cards — cardholders spend on credit and pay at the end of each month. Unlike neobank cards (Revolut, N26, Bunq), AMEX performs a BKR credit check and requires a minimum income level that varies by product.
AMEX’s main differentiator is its premium positioning, the Membership Rewards loyalty programme, and a direct relationship with both cardholders and merchants. The network processes transactions on its own rails — not via Visa or Mastercard — which allows AMEX to offer features and benefits not available on other networks.
The principal limitation of AMEX in the Netherlands is acceptance. While major retailers, hotels, online shops and international businesses accept AMEX, acceptance is approximately 85% versus 99% for Visa and Mastercard. Some smaller Dutch businesses, petrol stations and supermarkets only accept Visa or Mastercard due to AMEX’s higher merchant processing fees. Most Dutch AMEX cardholders also carry a Visa or Mastercard backup.
American Express Cards Available in the Netherlands
AMEX Green Card
- ✦1x Membership Rewards per € spent
- ✦Basic travel insurance included
- ✦Purchase protection 90 days
- ✦Access to AMEX Offers
The AMEX Green Card is the gateway to the American Express world in the Netherlands. At €95 per year it provides access to the Membership Rewards programme and basic travel protections. It is the logical starting point for anyone new to AMEX who wants to build history with the issuer before potentially upgrading to Gold or Platinum in the future.
AMEX Gold Card
- ✦2x points on travel & transport
- ✦Comprehensive travel insurance
- ✦Purchase protection 180 days
- ✦Car rental insurance
The AMEX Gold is the most popular American Express card in the Netherlands. It targets frequent travellers who want to earn double points on flights, trains and hotel bookings while also having comprehensive insurance coverage. The full insurance package — covering medical emergencies, trip cancellation, delayed baggage and car rental — adds significant value that partially offsets the annual fee for regular travellers.
AMEX Platinum Card
- ✦Unlimited Priority Pass lounge access
- ✦Privium at Schiphol included
- ✦€200 annual travel credit
- ✦3x points on direct flight bookings
The AMEX Platinum is for high-frequency travellers who extract maximum benefit from premium travel perks. The Privium membership alone (€285/yr standalone value), unlimited Priority Pass access to 1,300+ lounges worldwide, €200 travel credit, and comprehensive insurance together far exceed the €720 annual fee for anyone flying 15–20+ times per year. It is one of the most benefit-rich cards available in the Netherlands.
AMEX Business Gold Card
- ✦4x points on top 2 spending categories
- ✦Additional employee cards available
- ✦Business travel insurance
- ✦Accounting & expense management tools
The AMEX Business Gold is designed for Dutch entrepreneurs and business owners who want to maximise Membership Rewards on their highest business spending. The adaptive 4x points automatically apply to whichever two categories you spend most in each billing period — whether advertising, office supplies, travel or dining — making it highly flexible for varied business spending patterns compared to fixed-category alternatives.
Membership Rewards: AMEX’s loyalty programme
How to earn points
Every eligible purchase earns Membership Rewards points. The Green card earns 1x per euro. The Gold earns 2x on travel, transport and selected partners. The Platinum earns 3x on direct airline bookings. The Business Gold earns 4x on your top two spending categories each month. Points never expire as long as your account remains open and in good standing.
How to redeem points for maximum value
Points can be transferred to Flying Blue (Air France/KLM) at a 1:1 ratio — typically the highest-value redemption option. Business class flights from Amsterdam to North America, for example, can be redeemed for 50,000–70,000 points one-way, representing excellent value. Points also transfer to Marriott Bonvoy, Hilton Honors, and can be redeemed for gift cards or statement credits. The transfer-to-airline-miles route consistently provides the best cents-per-point value.
AMEX acceptance in the Netherlands in 2026
AMEX acceptance in the Netherlands has improved over the past decade but remains notably below Visa and Mastercard. Major Dutch supermarkets (Albert Heijn, Lidl, Aldi), some petrol stations and smaller independent retailers often do not accept AMEX. However, Schiphol Airport, international hotels, major online platforms (Booking.com, Amazon), department stores, most restaurants and all international businesses reliably accept AMEX. The gap in acceptance versus Visa/Mastercard is manageable if you carry a backup card for smaller Dutch businesses.
