Who is ABN AMRO?
ABN AMRO (Algemeene Bank Nederland & Amsterdamsche en Rotterdamsche Bank) is the third largest bank in the Netherlands by assets, with approximately 5 million retail and corporate customers. ABN AMRO has its headquarters in Amsterdam and provides a full range of retail banking, wealth management and corporate banking services.
Like ING and Rabobank, ABN AMRO credit cards are issued and managed by ICS (International Card Services), of which ABN AMRO is a shareholder. ICS handles the operational side of all ABN AMRO credit cards — transaction processing, fraud management, customer service and the 24/7 emergency line. ABN AMRO credit cards require an ABN AMRO bank account to apply.
ABN AMRO offers both personal and business credit cards. Personal cards are available to individuals with an ABN AMRO current account who pass a BKR credit check. Business cards (Corporate and Business) are available to companies registered at the KvK with an ABN AMRO business account. Corporate cards provide employee management features and separate spending tracking.
All ABN AMRO credit cards include 365-day purchase protection as a standard feature — an industry-standard benefit across all ICS-issued cards in the Netherlands. This provides valuable cover for items purchased with the card against theft and accidental damage within the first year of purchase.
ABN AMRO Credit Cards in Detail
ABN AMRO Creditcard
- ✦365-day purchase protection
- ✦Mastercard accepted worldwide
- ✦Manage via ABN AMRO app
- ✦Zero Liability fraud protection
The ABN AMRO Creditcard is the entry-level credit card for ABN customers. At €29/year it provides the essential functionality of a credit card with 365-day purchase protection and worldwide Mastercard acceptance. For ABN customers who primarily use the card for domestic spending and online shopping rather than frequent international travel, this card offers the most cost-effective entry point.
ABN AMRO Mastercard Gold
- ✦Travel & accident insurance
- ✦365-day purchase protection
- ✦Higher credit limit
- ✦Emergency assistance abroad 24/7
The ABN AMRO Mastercard Gold is aimed at ABN customers who travel regularly and want the peace of mind of built-in travel insurance. The travel insurance package covers medical emergencies, trip cancellation, delayed baggage and personal accidents. At €59/year, the insurance element alone often justifies the upgrade from the standard card for anyone who takes 2–3 international trips per year.
ABN AMRO Corporate Card
- ✦Employee card issuance & management
- ✦Travel insurance for employees
- ✦Expense management integration
- ✦Higher limits per card
The ABN AMRO Corporate Card is designed for medium to large companies that need to manage multiple employee credit cards centrally. Corporate cards allow the company to set individual spending limits per employee, track expenses by category, integrate with expense management software, and provide travel insurance to all cardholding employees. Pricing is negotiated per company agreement based on number of cards and usage.
ABN AMRO Business Card
- ✦Business spending separated from personal
- ✦Bookkeeping export for accounting
- ✦Purchase protection on business purchases
- ✦Annual fee tax deductible
The ABN AMRO Business Card is tailored for freelancers (ZZP), sole traders and small business owners who need a dedicated business credit card. It separates business and personal spending cleanly, generates expense reports for accounting, and provides purchase protection on business purchases. The annual fee is tax-deductible as a business expense for registered companies and freelancers.
ABN AMRO and ICS: how it works
Why ICS issues ABN AMRO credit cards
All ABN AMRO credit cards are issued and managed operationally by ICS (International Card Services). ABN AMRO is one of ICS’s major shareholders. ICS handles transaction processing, fraud monitoring, the 24/7 customer service line, and all insurance claims. The card you apply for says ABN AMRO, but the operational entity is ICS. This is standard practice across Dutch banks and provides ABN customers with ICS’s 50+ years of credit card expertise.
Avoiding interest on your ABN AMRO credit card
ABN AMRO credit cards charge approximately 14–15% annual interest on unpaid balances. This is the standard rate across Dutch bank credit cards. To avoid all interest, set up an automatic full repayment via your ABN AMRO current account each month. This can be configured through the ABN AMRO app or internet banking. When paid in full monthly, a credit card is effectively a free payment instrument with 365-day purchase protection added as a bonus.
Applying for an ABN AMRO credit card
ABN AMRO customers can apply online via the ABN AMRO website or app. The application requires your income details, employment situation and consent for a BKR credit check. Personal cards for private individuals typically receive a decision within minutes. Business cards for companies may require additional documentation including KvK registration details and recent financial statements. Physical cards are delivered within 5–7 business days after approval.
