What is the Revolut Business Card?
The Revolut Business Card is a business Mastercard linked to a Revolut Business account — a multi-currency business account. The card is prepaid: there is no credit line. You can only spend what is in your Revolut Business account. This is fundamentally different from a traditional business credit card with a credit limit.
Revolut is not a traditional bank but an e-money institution, similar to Wise Business. This has practical implications: your business funds are not covered by the deposit guarantee scheme, but Revolut is legally required to keep customer funds in segregated accounts. To apply, you need a Dutch Chamber of Commerce (KVK) registration — a sole trader registration is sufficient for freelancers.
The core advantage is the multi-currency functionality: you can hold business accounts in 30+ currencies, exchange at the interbank rate (within your plan's free limits) and manage multiple virtual and physical cards simultaneously. This makes Revolut Business particularly attractive for entrepreneurs who do business internationally.
Plans and costs
Revolut Business offers three main plans. The Free plan (€0/month) is free and includes 5 free international transactions per month and up to €1,000/month in free currency exchange. Ideal for freelancers with limited international payment volume. The Grow plan (€25/month) provides 100 free international transactions, €10,000 free exchange limit per month and up to 5 team members with their own card.
The Scale plan (€100/month) offers unlimited international transactions, €50,000 free exchange limit and unlimited team member cards. This plan is aimed at growing businesses with high transaction volumes. Above the free limits, Revolut charges 0.5% currency exchange surcharge on weekdays and 1% at weekends.
A key advantage over traditional business bank accounts: there are no hidden costs for SEPA transfers within the plan, no monthly account fees on top of the plan subscription and no revenue or legal structure threshold — even a sole trader or partnership can open Revolut Business.
Benefits for entrepreneurs and freelancers
The biggest advantage for freelancers is that there is no personal credit check. With traditional business credit cards (ABN AMRO, ING, Rabobank), a personal BKR credit check is always performed because the entrepreneur is personally liable for the credit line. With Revolut Business this does not apply, since no credit is extended.
Virtual cards per employee, project or supplier are a powerful management tool. You can set spending limits per virtual card, block cards instantly and view all spending per card in real time. This also makes Revolut Business interesting for small teams managing business expenses. There are also direct accounting integrations with Xero, QuickBooks and FreeAgent, so administration is largely automated.
For internationally operating entrepreneurs, the multi-currency business account is the most distinctive feature. You can receive and pay in euros, dollars, pounds and 30+ other currencies without expensive conversions. Bulk payments to suppliers in different currencies are easy to set up via the dashboard or API. This saves hundreds of euros per year in exchange rate losses for active international users.
Revolut Business vs traditional business credit cards
Compared to ABN AMRO or ING business cards, Revolut Business offers no real credit line — this is a fundamental difference. Traditional bank cards give you a credit limit (€2,500–€10,000), allowing you to pay even with an empty account. However, they require a personal credit check and are only available to existing customers of that bank. Revolut Business has neither restriction, but also provides no credit buffer.
Knab Business is a real bank with an IBAN account and business credit card with credit limit. Knab is covered by the deposit guarantee scheme and offers better protection for larger cash reserves. If your business funds exceed €10,000, a real bank like Knab is safer due to the government guarantee. Revolut Business is better for day-to-day business payments and international transactions.
N26 Business uses a similar prepaid model and is also an e-money institution (now with a banking licence). However, N26 Business is aimed more at freelancers and solo entrepreneurs, while Revolut Business with its team features and API integrations scales better to small and medium-sized businesses. For freelancers with international clients, Revolut Business is generally the better choice.
