What is the American Express Gold Card?
The American Express Gold Card is a charge card — not a conventional credit card. This means your full balance must be settled at the end of every month. There is no fixed spending limit, but carrying a balance or paying in instalments is not possible. For many cardholders this is actually an advantage: because no credit is extended, you never pay interest and cannot accumulate revolving debt.
The card is issued directly by American Express and runs on the AMEX network. In the Netherlands, American Express is accepted at approximately 85% of retailers and restaurants — virtually all major chains, webshops and international providers accept AMEX. At smaller independent local businesses you may occasionally need to fall back on a Visa or Mastercard.
The Membership Rewards programme is the centrepiece of the AMEX Gold Card. You accumulate points automatically on every purchase without any action required. Those points can be redeemed for flights, hotel stays, gift cards and merchandise. American Express has transfer partnerships with virtually all major airlines and hotel loyalty programmes.
Costs and fees
The annual fee is €240 per year (€20 per month). This is a meaningful investment, but most active cardholders recoup this easily through points value and insurance coverage. American Express also allows you to request an additional card for a partner or family member — the first supplementary card is free of charge.
Because it is a charge card, you pay no interest. The balance is automatically debited from your bank account each month. For payments outside the euro zone, American Express charges a foreign exchange margin of 2%. For frequent non-euro spending, a Revolut or N26 card may be more practical for day-to-day foreign purchases.
The AMEX Gold Card requires a minimum net annual income of €20,000. A BKR credit check is performed. American Express applies strict acceptance criteria, which keeps the card exclusive but also means not everyone will qualify.
Membership Rewards: how the points programme works
With the AMEX Gold Card you earn 1 Membership Rewards point per euro spent. That sounds straightforward, but the value of those points depends heavily on how you redeem them. When transferred to airline miles or hotel loyalty programmes the value is typically highest: approximately 0.8 to 1.5 cents per point. At €1,500 per month in spending you accumulate 18,000 points per year, equivalent to roughly €144–270 in travel value.
Membership Rewards points can be transferred to 9 airline partners, including Flying Blue (KLM/Air France), British Airways Executive Club and Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer. The transfer process is straightforward via the AMEX app or website. Points do not expire as long as your account remains active.
In addition to points, the AMEX Gold Card includes 2 complimentary lounge visits per year via Priority Pass. Airport lounge access normally costs €20–35 per visit, so this represents €40–70 in direct value. You automatically receive a Priority Pass card once your AMEX Gold is activated.
Who is the American Express Gold Card best for?
The AMEX Gold Card is ideal for frequent travellers who want to earn points towards flights or hotels, and for professionals who make substantial monthly purchases whether for business or personal use. At €1,500+ per month the points value alone largely offsets the annual fee.
The card is less suitable if you sometimes want to defer payment (not possible with a charge card), if you mainly shop at smaller Dutch independent retailers (where AMEX is not always accepted), or if your net income is below €20,000 per year.
Considering an upgrade from the free AMEX Green Card? The Gold delivers significantly more value for active users. Comparing to the Platinum? That card suits frequent lounge users (unlimited access vs. 2 visits/year) and people who want Privium Plus benefits at Schiphol — priority lanes and passport control — and hotel elite status with Hilton and Marriott.
